Detox Treatment Deserts: How Far Is the Nearest Detox?

2,881 places in America have an addiction treatment center but no detox — and from half of the ones that can be measured, the nearest detox is at least 18.1 miles away.

That is measured straight across a map. The real trip is longer.

If you need help finding a place, one free call will get you a list.

Call 1-800-662-4357

What happens when you call: a trained information specialist picks up and points you to treatment programs, support groups and community organizations near you. SAMHSA says the service will not ask you for any personal information — it may ask your ZIP code so it can find what is close. It is free, confidential, open 24 hours a day every day of the year, and answered in English and Spanish. It is not a counseling line, and nobody there is selling you anything. If you have no insurance, SAMHSA refers you to your state office for state-funded programs.

If someone is unresponsive, not breathing normally, or having a seizure, call 911 first. For a suicide or mental health crisis, call or text 988.

Where the nearest detox is farthest away

Each state is shaded by how far the typical city area in it sits from the nearest facility reporting detox — the same figure each state page gives. Darker means farther from detox. Tap a state to open it, or use the full ranked list underneath, which carries every figure in words.

The numbers behind this

Everything above comes from one federal dataset. This is that dataset, in full, with what it can and cannot tell you spelled out at the bottom.

Of the 4,185 US city areas that list at least one addiction treatment facility in the federal SAMHSA FindTreatment.gov directory, 2,881 have no facility reporting detoxification services at all. For the 2,756 of those city areas that have usable coordinates, the median straight-line distance to the nearest detox facility is 18.1 miles, a quarter of them are more than 34.1 miles away, and the farthest — Barrow, Alaska — is 700.1 miles from the nearest detox-group facility in the directory.

What this page measures

Detoxification is often the first medically supervised step for someone withdrawing from alcohol or opioids, and it is the step that is hardest to substitute with a phone call or a longer drive. This page measures one narrow, checkable thing: for every city area in the federal directory that has any treatment facility, how far is it in a straight line to the nearest facility that reports offering detox.

It is a distance measure and nothing more. It does not use county boundaries, it does not adjust for population, and it does not evaluate any facility. Distance is not the same as access — a facility eleven miles away can still be unreachable without a car, and a facility with a listing can still have no open bed. The numbers below describe the shape of the federal record, not the lived experience of getting care.

Distribution of distance to the nearest detox facility

Straight-line miles from a city area’s facility centroid to the nearest detox-group facility. City areas with no facility coordinates are excluded.

The first row includes city areas that have a detox facility of their own, where the distance from the centroid to that facility is close to zero. That is why the two medians differ so widely: 8.5 miles across every city area, 18.1 miles once you look only at the 2,756 places that have treatment but no detox.

How this was built, and what it cannot tell you

  • Source. Every facility record comes from the federal SAMHSA FindTreatment.gov directory. Rehab Connect USA imported this copy of the directory between April 9, 2026 and April 16, 2026. That is an import date, not a verification date — we do not know when SAMHSA last checked any individual record, and we make no claim that this data is current.
  • “Detox” means a reported field group, not a verified service. The directory stores services as SAMHSA field-group codes. A facility counted here as offering detox is one that reported into the detoxification group. It is not confirmation that a specific detox service exists, is staffed, or is available to any given person.
  • 938 facilities have no coordinates and are excluded from all distance math. Of the 2,283 facilities in the detox group, 2,099 have usable latitude and longitude and 184 do not. Those 184 cannot be the answer to “where is the nearest detox,” so a real facility may sit closer than a distance shown here. Distances on this page are therefore upper bounds, not exact travel figures.
  • 152 of the 4,185 city areas have no facility with coordinates at all and appear in the counts but carry no distance.
  • Distances are straight-line, not driving distance. Each figure is the great-circle (haversine) distance from a city area’s facility centroid — the average position of its listed facilities — to the nearest detox-group facility. Real travel is longer, sometimes far longer where there is water, mountain, or no road.
  • The nearest facility is not filtered by state line. For 336 city areas the closest detox-group facility is in a different state. That is the correct answer for someone actually travelling, so it is not suppressed.
  • City areas are matched case-insensitively. A raw distinct query over the directory returns 4,186 city and state combinations; that is 1 more than the 4,185 used here because LaGrange, Indiana is stored under two different capitalizations. It is one place, counted once.
  • Appearing in the federal record is not a guarantee of anything. A listing is not a guarantee of current operation, open beds, admission, insurance acceptance, or availability at the moment you call. Contact the facility directly.
  • What is not here. This page does not use county boundaries and does not adjust for population. It measures distance only. It does not rate, rank, recommend, or endorse any facility, and it says nothing about treatment quality or outcomes.
